Flood Study Results Align With Dam Design and Estimates

8/5/2021

The Four Lakes Task Force (FLTF) Precipitation and Flood studies needed for determining the spillway designs for the dams have been completed and results indicate the dam design cost estimates from the last study are holding up.
Flood studies represent one of four critical issues for the FLTF Lake Restoration Plan for Secord, Smallwood, Edenville and Sanford dams, and their completion is an important milestone toward restoration of the lakes.
A few notable points about the studies:
  • The flood study was completed by Ayres Associates and Applied Weather Associates conducted the Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) study. There has been significant peer review
  • GEI Consultants continues with its hydraulic modeling based on these studies to establish the dam spillway design
  • Dam flow rates will be determined first on Secord and Smallwood dams, and then on Edenville and Sanford dams based on the outcome of the northern dams. We must study all four lakes as a system to understand the upstream and downstream impacts of each dam
  • The dams' spillway capacity will be greater than what existed on the former dam spillways
  • FLTF studies are being shared with EGLE, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other agencies.
More detail will be shared during the August 18 community information session (register at the link below.)
