Fish Population and Algae on Sanford Lake
8/26/2026

With Sanford Lake currently undergoing a significant ecological transition, the decomposition of released nutrients, such as vegetation, debris and other organic materials, is leading to increased algae, lower oxygen levels and higher water temperatures. This is the cause of an abnormal number of fish kills and algal blooms. There is no treatment for the algae. Sanford Lake is still re-establishing itself as an aquatic ecosystem and the best approach is to allow the bloom to run its course while monitoring conditions.

Smallwood Dam Receives Approval From EGLE

Smallwood Dam is substantially complete! This is an exciting milestone in the restoration of the four lakes system. The refill has begun. Secord Dam substantial completion has been delayed to November due to an installation issue with one of the spillway gates. The lake refill is still scheduled for April 15, 2027.
