Notice on Accessing lake bottomlands for property recovery

5/28/2020

The following notice applies to contractors that are working in Midland County on Sanford and Wixom Lake bottomlands to remove pontoons, hoists and docks.

Note: If contractors need to put equipment on the lake bottoms in Gladwin County, that is a matter for Boyce. FLTF is in contact with them on this matter and will provide more information when it’s available. See below map for information on who owns the lake bottomlands.

If owners (on Sanford or Wixom Lakes in Midland County) are retrieving property from their shoreline or accessing through their property, they do not need to seek approval. They will need to seek the owner’s permission to access private property in the case that the personal property being recovered is on another owner’s property.

If the removal requires equipment to be placed on the bottomlands, they will need to go through a contractor:

Statement on the Future of the Sanford, Wixom, Smallwood, and Secord Lakes

5/26/2020

Recent events related to the Edenville dam failure were terrible and tragic for our community. All of us on the Four Lakes Task Force are devastated by our individual and collective losses, and our hearts go out to everyone who is impacted. The Lake Associations and Counties were in the process of acquiring the dams, with a closing expected, and then to improve the dams to survive historic floods. The acquisition has not and will not take place under the terms that were negotiated with Boyce Hydro this past winter.

STATEMENT OF Support from MARK BONE, CHAIR, MIDLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

5/26/2020

The tragedy of last week has left a huge void in our community. Fortunately, the dam failures did not cost any of our citizens physical injury.

We, as a community, are now left to move forward to prevent further deterioration of the four dams currently owned by Boyce Trust, and employing the combined resources of our community look to repair the dams and restore the lakes.

The Four Lakes Task Force, the authority delegated by Midland and Gladwin counties to purchase and maintain the lake system, has agreed to guide the county's effort to secure and resurrect the dam structures and lakes.

Speaking for myself, I fully support the efforts of the Four Lakes Task Force, and with the support of my fellow commissioners, hope to preserve and recreate the lakes and dams.
