Secord, Smallwood and Sanford dams are fully permitted. Secord and Smallwood construction was suspended in 2024 due to a lack of funds. Sanford construction will be suspended shortly because of a lack of funds. It was documented in the January hearing and February county meeting that FLTF was planning to obtain $80 million in municipal bonds in June of 2024 to pay for construction work on all four dams through 2024 and 2025. Municipal financing has not occurred as a result of the appeal. Edenville is not fully permitted so FLTF has only been able to use funds from the State of Michigan until a Habitat Control Plan and an incidental take permit are approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Therefore, construction was suspended first on Edenville so all dams could reach a stable suspension point with the remaining Michigan grant funds. Edenville Permits Expected in January 2025The permits for Edenville Dam have taken longer than expected. All the paperwork is filed and we expect to receive the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service take permit for the mussels this month. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) submitted the draft permit for the final phase of Edenville construction to FLTF in late December. FLTF responded with comments and anticipates receiving a final permit soon.
